Description

The Children, Race, and Racism Institute is a long-standing professional learning conference hosted by the Seattle Department of Education & Early Learning (DEEL). The Institute brings educators together in a shared learning environment focused on undoing racism in educational spaces and advancing equitable outcomes for children.

First held more than 34 years ago, the Institute began when a group of educators came together around a common purpose: to dismantle racism in education. From the very beginning, they understood that this work must start with our youngest learners. That belief remains just as urgent and essential today.

This year’s Institute offers a reflective look back and a celebration of the Seattle Preschool Program as we mark the close of its 10th year. The day will begin with an opening keynote, followed by an interactive morning presentation. In the afternoon, participants will choose from a selection of workshops exploring topics such as Street Data, Liberatory Design, Making Meaning of Data Through an Equity Lens, and more.

The 2026 theme, Honoring the Cultural Brilliance of Seattle’s Children: Growing and Glowing from Early Learning to 3rd Grade, reflects an expanded focus. While the Institute has historically centered preschool-age children, this year we are excited to welcome school-age partners in recognition of the importance of their role alongside preschool educators in supporting kindergarten transition and sustaining growth beyond preschool.

Breakfast and lunch will be provided.
STARS hours will be available for attendees.
